Welcome to Day 3 of the Smácht 28 Bootcamp.
One of the many perks of getting to organise and run the Bootcamp was to have gotten the opportunity to drive Jim McGuinness from Athlone to Galway yesterday morning. I listened in awe as he revealed to me that he has a programme of 20 Key Performance Indicators for every position on the field. This means that a goalkeeper, for example, has 20 specific benchmarks to measure his performance by.
Note that he mentioned the word ‘Performance’ as opposed to ‘Result.’ If you focus on the performance the result will come. A goalkeeper may keep a clean sheet – a good result – but may have neglected to encourage his teammates or failed to get the team moving by accurate and clever kicking out.
Jim’s point was that if players continue to focus on KPIs the performance will be become second nature – ie it will become a routine and a habit.
That therefore is the challenge to us over the next 25 days – to develop Key Performance Routines, that in turn will become habitual.
The Key Performance Routine we prescribe for today is RECREATION.
The word ‘recreation’ derives from the Latin ‘creare’ which literally
means to ‘create’ or ‘bring forth.’ In order to do that we need to take time to rest and to refresh and to rejuvenate. A great routine to develop is to commit to a total rest day on Sunday. That means no checking emails; no chasing up on team members to plan for tomorrow; and no stewing and stressing over the countless problems that still will be there tomorrow anyway.
Au contraire, it means partaking in activities today that refresh, and rejuvenate and reinvigorate. Take time today for:
Your hobbies, passions and interests – and if you don’t have one contact Danny Mulryan on our programme who’ll teach you to wind surf and canoe or Rob and Maurice Flynn who will show you how to scuba dive.
Your spirit – you may go to mass or another religious ceremony just for the stimulation, but equally effective would be to take time just to be silent and still and serene.
Live theatre – nothing ever quite compares to the live show. You can see Padraig O’Ceidigh and Jim McGuinness and Gerry Duffy and Pat Divilly on the Late Late Show – they’ve all been guests – but nothing compares to seeing, and listening and feeling them up close as we did on Friday last. Today go to a match. I’m going to support Galway hammering Donegal in the Pearce Stadium in Galway. Go to a fete. Or simply go to your favourite restaurant or bar and people watch.
One of the great mind sets we’d love to challenge you to debunk over the remainder of the programme is that sometimes, IN ORDER TO SPEED UP YOU NEED TO SLOW DOWN. Our entire society is obsessed with doing more, faster, harder. From now on you make Sundays your day of rest.

Day 1 was IMMERSION – in the principles of Smácht which are that motivation gets you moving; strategy determines what direction; and routines keep you going.
Day 2 was SWEAT – 20 minutes consistent aerobic exercise on alternate days. You will feel better, look better, think better, cope better and perform better.
Day 4 will be Finding, Connecting and Accounting with your Smácht Cara.
Day 28 will be MEASUREMENT.
