A PEP Talk for 2018.

PEP talks work. Simple as. In sport, in politics, in family life. And not surprisingly, in business.

PEP talks work best at the start of something new. The start of a game. The start of a second half. The start of a new year. This is a great week therefore to give a PEP talk. To yourself, your team and your family.

And yet, many PEP talks fail to engage, to inspire and to get people to take action. What therefore are the secrets of a great PEP talk?

WHAT MAKES A GREAT PEP TALK?

Bono may dispute it but Jorge Bergoglio has probably eclipsed him to become the hottest PEP talk property on the circuit currently. More than three million people thronged the beach to see him in Rio on World Youth Day in 2013. A record six million flocked to hear him at Manila’s Rizal Park in the Philippines in 2015. And you can bet your holy communion medal that millions will hang on his every movement in Ireland later this year.

Amongst them will be my mother who’ll have you believe that it’s his chastity, humility and devotion to the Blessed Virgin that’s responsible for it. But if you study carefully his every talk, sermon or interview there’s another simple secret beneath his aura.

In his opening sermon as the newly elected pontiff, Pope Francis summarised his faith in three bullet points: ‘journeying, building and professing.’ In Manila, he identified their problems as being caused by three sources – ‘poverty, ignorance and corruption.’

Later in Rome, he would credit his Jesuit training with his formula for outstanding communications success. ‘First of all, I will talk about three things: one, two, three, like old-timer Jesuits used to do, right? One, two, three.’

That’s the first component of giving a powerful pep talk. Insist this year on developing the habit of using THE POWER OF THREE in all your communications. With yourself; with your team; with your customers.

You see, your brain is only capable of remembering seven items in short term memory. That’s why your mobile phone has seven numbers in it. Many of us however have difficulty even remembering seven numbers so we chunk them down into smaller groups of three or four. And as your brain is inherently lazy it thinks in terms of patterns and three is the lowest number of items that can establish a single pattern or progression.
The trick to successful goal accomplishment is that less is more. Many entrepreneurs begin the year with long lists of goals.

The second component of a great PEP talk is that it’s memorable and endures long after the talk is over. And a great way to make a talk memorable is to encapsulate your three points in an acronym. An acronym is one word containing the first letter of each of the other words. I had the pleasure of hearing Jack Donoghue, the legendary Canadian basketball coach, describe how Canada did so well in the Olympics even though that speech was in Vancouver back in 1988. Donoghue explained that his team had ICE. (Intensity. Concentration. Enthusiasm.) He then elaborated on each of the three points.

Therefore, as we commence a new year ask yourself a simple yet super powerful question.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT AREAS OF FOCUS – THOSE THAT WOULD CONTRIBUTE THE MOST TO THE QUALITY OF YOUR BUSINESS AND LIFE – IN 2018.

Here are the three we’ll be focusing on in The SMÁCHT Mastermind Alliance for Entrepreneurs this year. They can be summarised in the word or acronym PEP. (Physical. Emotional. Profit.)

1. PHYSICAL.

When you are physically fit you get better results. Period.

You feel better; you look better; you perform better. Successful entrepreneurs – those who progressively achieve worthy ideals – ooze and radiate energy.

Given the benefits you’d imagine we’d set high physical fitness as a priority. The evidence reveals we don’t. A mere 11% of American business people claimed they had high energy levels yesterday.

Open heart surgery taught me how wide the spectrum of energy is. I went from comfortably running 10k on a Sunday to struggling to walk 30 meters the following Friday after surgery. I recall thinking in bed that without energy one can achieve little. With great energy one can achieve unlimited opportunities.

DEVELOP SIMPLE DISCIPLINES, ROUTINES AND HABITS THAT ENSURE YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS IS TOP CLASS.

2. EMOTIONAL.

With energy you technically can achieve anything. In practice you can only do this with and through other people. It’s interesting that high EQ or emotional intelligence is the single highest predictor of entrepreneurial success.

And yet many entrepreneurs struggle with the people side of the business. In ‘Scaling Up,’ Verne Harnish gets you to think back on the day you started your business with just yourself and maybe one assistant. ‘This start-up situation represents two channels of communications (degrees of complexity), and anyone in a relationship knows that is hard enough. Add a third person (or customer or location or product), and the degree of complexity triples from two to six. Add a fourth and of quadruples to twenty four.

‘Expanding from three to four people grows the team only 33%, yet complexity may increase 400%. And the complexity just keeps growing exponentially. It’s why many business owners often long for the day when the company was just them and an assistant selling a single product.’

DEVELOP SIMPLE DISCIPLINES, ROUTINES AND HABITS THAT ENSURE YOU BECOME A GREAT PEOPLE PERSON AND YOUR TEAM IS PERFORMING TO THEIR POTENTIAL.

3. PROFITABLE.

You’ve likely heard the adage that ‘revenue is vanity, profit is sanity.’ I was astounded recently to hear the author of Profit First, Mike Michalowicz, state that 83% of businesses worldwide are not profitable and are effectively surviving from paycheck to paycheck.

For 2018 decide assertively to focus on profit first. The other old adage that what you focus on multiplies is absolutely true. Becoming profitable is a bit like Weight-watchers. It is first and foremost a mindset. Secondly it’s a system of proven routines and techniques. Thirdly it’s having the accountability to measure your progress in public.

DEVELOP SIMPLE DISCIPLINES, ROUTINES AND HABITS THAT ENSURE YOU ARE PROFITABLE IN 2018.

If you are seriously interested in boosting your physical fitness, increasing your emotional intelligence and becoming profitable in 2018 you can by all means do it on your own. One thing is certain however, you will do it infinitely faster as part of a team or a tribe who are challenging and encouraging you and holding you accountable to becoming a better leader in business and life. I am currently assembling a group of 12 elite entrepreneurs to work together on themselves and their business in 2018 starting on January 23 next.
