Every Mother Thinks Their Baby Is Beautiful


Reillys buddy, Flaherty, had a new baby last week. At least his wife, Bridie had.

Grudgingly Reilly traipsed all the way up to the Maternity to visit them or
he’d never hear the end of it if he didn’t.

Bridie hoisted the baby up proudly for Reilly to see.

There was no denying the genetic blueprint of the baby. Already she had
Flaherty’s crooked nose and a burgeoning bush of carrot red hair just like

‘Isn’t she beautiful?’ said Bridie, and Reilly could tell that she really
believed it.

Reilly concluded that all Mothers must think their own babies are
beautiful. But being of superior emotional intelligence he kept that strictly
to himself.

Very few Mothers, on seeing their baby for the first time, proclaim ‘oh
aren’t you ugly!’ This does not masquerade the fact however that there
are ugly babies out there.

So it is with business people. To all intents and purposes we are mothers
to our businesses and products. They are our babies. We conceived them; delivered them; nurtured them. And we too think our business and
products are beautiful.

The thing is that the marketplace is neither as emotionally intelligent nor
as tolerant as Reilly. To be blunt about it, the marketplace doesn’t give a
fiddlers about our business and how passionately we love it.
